Crispy Air Fryer Chicken Sandwich

This air fryer chicken sandwich is the best high protein meal! A crispy outside layer holds juicy, tender meat on the inside. You won’t believe the whole thing is under 450 calories!

I’m a big fan of Chick-fil-A. Chicken is not only an excellent source of protein, but the famous restaurant has a handful of macro friendly options – if you know what to look for.

The only problem is that Chick-fil-A tends to get crowded pretty fast in my area. That’s why I like using my air fryer to make this crispy chicken sandwich at home (which also helps save money).

All you need is boneless, skinless chicken breast, ingredients for breading, and your favorite sauce. The end result is a delicious sandwich that contains 50 grams of protein!

Ingredients

Breading

  • Breadcrumbs: This helps get the outside nice and crispy. I’m using gluten free breadcrumbs for this recipe.
  • Garlic powder: Dehydrated garlic powder helps in cooking for enhancing the flavor.
  • Onion powder: Onion always pairs well with garlic and also improves the flavor with the breadcrumbs.
  • Paprika: A small amount of paprika provides a mild spice. It also helps create a nice smokey flavor.
  • Oregano: A pinch of oregano ties all of these spices together. It also pairs well with the other breading ingredients.

Sauce

  • Greek yogurt: This unique ingredient helps hold the breading to the chicken breast. It also adds more protein to the chicken sandwich.
  • Salt & pepper: A pinch of salt and pepper is standard for most chicken recipes. Salt enhances the flavor, while black pepper adds flavor.

Toppings

  • Bun: The bun is very important when making a healthier chicken sandwich. I’m using a low calorie bun to save on calories and carbs.
  • Cheese: This is another area where calories can add up. Use reduced fat (or no fat cheese) to add creaminess and flavor.
  • Lettuce: A layer of lettuce provides an enticing crunch to any sandwich. You can really add any veggies you want and don’t have to worry about calories.
  • Tomato: This topping is another personal preference. But using a perfectly ripe tomato adds more freshness and juice to your sandwich.
  • Sauce: For this sandwich I opted for a spicy mayo topping. You can make this yourself by using 2 parts light mayonnaise and 1 part sriracha hot sauce.

Instructions

This crispy air fryer chicken sandwich is perfect for the summer. You can scroll down to the recipe card for more detailed instructions. Here’s an overview of the general steps:

Start off by combining breadcrumbs, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and oregano on a plate. Stir around the ingredients thoroughly, before setting this breading mixture aside.

Next place 2 slices of chicken breast in a large bowl (4-5 ounces each). I recommend cutting a regular size chicken breast in half and trimming the fat off. Cover each piece of chicken with Greek yogurt, salt, and pepper.

Then transfer the chicken to your breading plate. Press down on each piece from the top, making sure to coat each side with the breading mixture.

Once fully covered, air fry the chicken for 15-20 minutes at 400° F (thicker cuts will take more time). Make sure to flip halfway through.

Finally, remove your chicken from the air fryer and serve immediately. Add your favorite toppings and sauce when building each sandwich. I used the spicy mayo for this recipe!
