Barebells Protein Bar Chocolate Dough Review

I’ve been meaning to try these Barebells protein bars for a while now. Established in 2016, this company focuses on making healthier protein bars that don’t compromise on flavor.

One way they accomplish this is by NOT using any added sugar, which I think is important. Too many of these “protein bars” can have a ton of sugar and they end up resembling candy bars.

Here’s the description from the Barebells website:

Our delicious Chocolate Dough bars are filled with mouthwatering chocolate dough, covered in creamy milk chocolate, and coated in chocolate crisps.

Alright, enough of the fluff. Let’s see how they taste.

Taste

As a cookie dough fanatic, I saw this Chocolate Dough flavor and my interest was piqued.

This protein bar contains two different colors of chocolate, so I guess that’s where the name comes from. If you’re a chocolate fan, you will probably enjoy this flavor.

It’s like a double hit of chocolate straight to your taste buds. It’s also just sweet enough without going overboard, and there’s no added sugar (which is a plus for me).

Texture

I really like the crunchy exterior, as you can see there are pieces of chocolate crisps on the outside.

After biting into the bar, I noticed there’s another type of darker chocolate on the inside, which creates an interesting variety in flavor. The inside also has a chewy consistency.

I would almost describe the interior texture as a Tootsie Roll, which is something I’ve never really experienced in a protein bar.

Aftertaste

Not much going on here. Some subtle hints of the chocolate lingered on the tailend. And unfortunatly there’s a slight protein aftertaste.

This is to be expected from a bar with 20 grams of protein. Is it the worst protein aftertaste I’ve ever experienced? No, but it’s noticeable.

The Barebells Protein Bar Chocolate Dough scores a 7.5 out of 10. The flavor is decent, but nothing sets it apart from other protein bars on the market.
