Healthy Apple Crisp with 30g Protein

This healthy apple crisp is the perfect fall recipe that won’t leave you feeling guilty. While enjoying these freshly baked apples mixed with cinnamon and maple syrup, you won’t even realize there’s 30 grams of protein!

As a lifelong New Englander, I’ve always loved the fall. No, not because the leaves change bright colors or the crisp autumn air. It’s all about the food! Who doesn’t love a warm pumpkin spice latte and cinnamon bun?

One downside is that most of my favorite fall foods contain sugar. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with sugar, but it’s easy to overindulge. That’s why I came up with this healthy apple crisp recipe that checks all the boxes regarding macronutrients.

Of course, there is an apple, which is nutrient-dense and loaded with fiber. Then there’s oatmeal, a slow-digesting carbohydrate that will keep you feeling full for longer. And we can’t forget about the protein from the Greek yogurt topping!

Cooking Tools You’ll Need

This healthy apple crisp recipe is very beginner-friendly. You’ll need an oven and about 25 minutes of cooking time. An apple slicer is optional, but an oven-safe baking dish is required.

The following sizes are needed to measure the ingredients in this recipe: 1/4 tsp, 1 tbsp, and 1/2 cup. You’ll also need a cooking scale to accurately measure the oats and walnuts.

How to Make Healthy Apple Crisp

Start by preheating your oven to 350° F (177° C). Place the sliced apples in an oven-safe baking dish, and add cinnamon, vanilla extract, and maple syrup. Ensure the apples are fully coated, and bake them for 10 minutes.

When the apples are in the oven, you can make the crisp by combining oats, walnuts, cinnamon, and maple syrup in a mixing bowl. Remove the warm apples from the oven and add the crisp, spreading it evenly over them.

Then, place the apple crisp back in the oven for 15 minutes. Pre-baking the apples before the oats helps to cook all of the ingredients evenly. Now, it’s time to make the high-protein topping.

All this consists of is plain Greek yogurt and vanilla protein powder. You can use vanilla Greek yogurt instead (just make sure it’s Greek yogurt for the extra protein). Remove the apple crisp from the oven, add the protein topping, and enjoy!
